In ancient times, the art Kumdo was practiced only by hand picked imperial royal guards, to protect the kings and palaces.
Presently, when practicing this sport we use what is called "jukdo" which is a 4 split bamboo sword. One will also wear the traditional uniform called "Hoku". This consists of wearing head and body gear that will protect you while practicing the art of Kumdo.
In any martial arts sport, strength is always a big advantage. Kumdo will certainly give you strength and endurance defining your expertise movement working with your strategy.
In most other martial arts sports one can be struck and come back for battle again and again, in most cases, until one falls. In the art of Kumdo, your battle depends on one blow (must like the samurai). There is no second chance to strategize your plan, which definitely makes this sport more challanging and fit.
In any practice of sports, a combination of speed and strength do play crucial roles. However, if one does not understand one's inner spiritual power and endurance, this can be a missing strength needed to win the challange. One must never underestimate the power of your opponent.
